A standard centrifugal pump consists of two main parts: the motor and the pump body. The motor drives the impeller inside the pump body to rotate, enabling continuous medium transfer. To cut electricity costs, you need to pay attention to both the pump body and the motor during selection.

The first thing to check is whether your current pump comes from a reputable manufacturer. If you are using a low-efficiency pump from a small, unbranded workshop — with poorly designed flow channels causing significant hydraulic losses, paired with a substandard motor — the overall operating efficiency may fall far below national standards, consuming excessive amounts of electricity. In such cases, even upgrading to a standard configuration from a legitimate brand can already deliver significant annual savings. Only on this foundation does it make sense to discuss advanced energy-saving solutions.

For pump body selection, the flow rate and head must match the actual operating conditions — oversizing or undersizing both lead to increased energy consumption. As for motors, standard-efficiency motors are the basic choice — low cost, widely used, and suitable for most general operating conditions. High-efficiency motors, while requiring a higher upfront investment, deliver better efficiency and lower power consumption. Currently, motor energy efficiency ratings in China are mainly classified as IE3 and IE4. The YE3 series corresponds to IE3, while the YE4 series meets the IE4 standard. Moving from YE3 to YE4 can improve efficiency by an additional 2% to 3% — a margin that may seem small, but for a large pump station operating 24/7, the annual difference is substantial.

A critical point to highlight: many factories are still using obsolete Y and Y2 series motors, which have long been phased out. These models have energy efficiency levels far below current national standards, resulting in excessive power consumption, high failure rates, and elevated maintenance costs. If your facility is still running such outdated equipment, upgrading to a YE3 or YE4 motor alone can deliver remarkable annual electricity savings.

If your facility runs many units with long operating hours, choosing the right pump type and high-efficiency motors can lead to unlimited savings on annual electricity bills — easily exceeding 100,000 CNY a year. To further reduce costs and boost efficiency, review whether your existing pump units are properly sized and whether motor efficiency ratings meet current standards — you may still uncover additional savings.
